This chunky alpaca wool knitting kit uses alpaca yarn from British and Irish farms. It is knitted in one piece as a flat panel, with one colour design on one side, and two-colour on the other. So, the pattern looks complicated, but it's not! Whilst not difficult, both back and front will keep you interested, and the end result is so lovely with super-soft alpaca chunky yarn.
Size: 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in).
The two patterns designs are:
- Front - Offset tiles, which involve slipping stitches, knit and purl
- Back - Knit, purl, buttonholes
- Colours - the Main Colour is for the back and buttonhole flap (250g) and the contrast colour is for the Front Tiles (100g)
- Shown here in Parchment and Saxifrage
- How To Videos available for all stitches and the buttonholes
Skill Level: Easy
Supplied with:
- Cotton alpaca project bag
- 350g (350m) Gorgeous Chunky yarn made from 75% alpaca / 25% sheep in quantity 250g (100m) for the Main Colour (the whole of the back, and the tiles on the front), and 100g (100m) for the second colour (the outline of the tiles)
- 5cm buttons x 5
- Pattern
- Optional add-on: 6mm (US 10) bamboo knitting needles
You Will also need a 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 inches) cushion pad. We recommend 41 x 41 cm cushion pads from Merrick & Day

As with all Gorgeous alpaca Chunky kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.
What's so great about alpaca yarn?
- Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability.
- The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
- It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
- It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
- Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture
Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.
Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

Frequently Asked Questions
Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.
Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.
Sustainable Fashion Story
Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.
Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
