Natural Alpaca Nesting Material for British Garden Birds

Treat your feathered friends to a cosy home with our 100% natural alpaca bird nesting fleece! Sheared from our own alpacas, this soft, thermal material provides the perfect insulation for nests, helping birds and their babies stay warm and protected.

When Do Birds Nest in the UK?

The main bird nesting season in the UK runs from March to September, with peak activity between March and July. However, different species have their own schedules:

  • January & February: Early nesters like crossbills, long-tailed tits, ravens, herons, and owls begin building or repairing nests
  • March: Common garden birds such as robins and blackbirds start building in earnest
  • April & May: Summer migrants including swallows, swifts, and house martins arrive and begin nesting
  • All Year Round: Woodpigeons and collared doves can nest throughout the year, especially in urban areas

Put out your alpaca fleece from late winter onwards to give birds plenty of time to discover and collect this premium nesting material before they start building.

Why Birds Love Alpaca Fleece

  • Naturally thermal: Provides excellent insulation to keep eggs and chicks warm
  • Soft and gentle: Won't harm delicate beaks or baby birds
  • Water-resistant: Alpaca fibre naturally repels moisture
  • 100% natural: No synthetic materials or chemicals
  • Sustainable: Zero-carbon footprint with no waste

How to Use

Simply fill your fat ball feeder or suet cage with the fleece and hang in your garden. Watch as birds discover it and fly away with beaks full to line their nests! You can also scatter small amounts on the ground or drape over branches.

What's included: 100g unwashed fleece from the neck and legs of our alpacas. All packs are a mix of white and ginger-tan colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.

Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.

Sustainable Fashion Story

Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.

Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
