FAQs

  1. Is this kit suitable for beginners? No, you should have worked with plain ribbing and be able to recognise a knit or purl stitch by it's shape.
  2. Can I make a longer/shorter scarf? Definitely. Just ensure your cast-on is a multiple of 4 +4 (for instance, 20+3=23, or 16+3=19)
  3. How do I wash my finished knit? Handwash or a gentle machine wash at 20C. Do not spin or wring out. If very wet, roll up in a towel to remove excess water before spreading out the work on a flat surface to dry.

The Wool

  • Weight: #5, Chunky
  • Blend: 75% Alpaca, 25% Sheep
  • Size:3/3Nm giving 100m per 100g
  • Ball size:50g (50m)
  • Tension:15 sts x 18 rows = 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 6mm (US10)

As with all Gorgeous alpaca Chunky kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.

What's so great about alpaca yarn?

  • Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability.
  • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
  • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
  • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
  • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.

Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.

Sustainable Fashion Story

Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.

Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
