The hat and cowl are made for the whole family, for all ages from 2 years to 110. It's worked in a simple 1x1 rib, and you can choose to make them in a single colour, or two colours, and there are plenty of options for different stripe patterns too.

As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.

What's so great about alpaca yarn? 

Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability.

Let's compare it to sheep's wool

    • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
    • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
    • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
    • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness. When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing. Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM.

Hat and scarf

The kit was very well presented, the wool feels soft as I have never used alpaca wool before I was surprised. I did find it strange that there were no knitting needles included with the kit and had to purchase some before starting.

Thank you so much for your positive review. I am sorry you were disappointed about the needles. They are listed as an optional extra. Now, the reason for this is that 80% of our customers already have the needles they need, and it would be unfair to get them to pay more for something they already had.
