This top follows the classic sleeveless sweater style, and it's available in a wide range of colours in our alpaca wool lightweight DK range, all sourced from British and Irish alpaca farms. Just pick a colour for the main body, and then a colour for the edging, and a third colour for the Fair Isle strip
The Design
The Norfolk is designed to be knitted in the round from the bottom up as far as the armholes. At this point the knitting splits on you work on the front and back separately. The armbands and neckbands are added at the end. You can adapt it to knit in two panels (back and front separately). It is knitted in seven colours.

Size and Yarn Quantities
The design is intended to be well-fitted, with 5 cm (2 inches) of positive ease. This will give your garment a classic fit, but the actual fitting is up to you. To choose your size and best fit, we recommend measuring your favourite sleeveless top and using that size. If you prefer a shorter style, you can reduce the length before the armholes start (see chart for measurements).
The kit includes:
- Cotton alpaca project bag
- Gorgeous DK yarn made from 75% alpaca/25% sheep's wool (225m per 100g) in quantity shown above for your size
- Pattern
- Needles and accessories required and NOT included - 3.75mm and 4.5mm circular needles, and stitch holder
Designer - Monica Russel
Technical Editor - Rebecca Williamson
Model - Henry Adeane
The Wool
- Weight of Yarn: #3, DK
- Blend: 75% alpaca 25% sheep
- Size: 4/9Nm giving 225m (245 yards) per 100g
- Ball Size: 50g (112m)
- Tension: 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)
As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.
What's so great about alpaca yarn?
- Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability
- The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
- It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
- It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
- Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture
Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.
Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

Frequently Asked Questions
Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.
Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.
Sustainable Fashion Story
Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.
Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
