Skill Level - Beginner

This scarf is for ABSOLUTE beginners who want to learn new knitting skills every 20cm! It has turned out to be really popular with expert knitters seeking a relaxing knit with lots of variety. The knitting kit uses alpaca yarn from British and Irish farms. It uses single pointed needles and we can include lovely bamboo knitting needles.

Just like our other beginners' scarf (The Garter Scarf) you will learn to cast on, cast off, and how to use the Number 1 stitch used in Knitting, the knit stitch.

... Then you will go on to learn Purl, Ribbing, Moss St; AND three other stitch formations of knitting. By the end, and quite quickly, you will have learn more knitting techniques than many experienced knitters. And you will discover how easy they are.

For other styles and sizes check out our Sampler Collection

All stitches are supported with our HOW-TO VIDEOS

Size: 20 x 160cm - or smaller to suit

Kit includes:

  • Cotton alpaca project bag
  • 250g (225m per 100g) Gorgeous DK yarn made from 75% alpaca/25% sheep's wool
  • Pattern for this, and the Vintage Beginners Scarf
  • Optional 4.5mm needles

The Wool

  • Weight of Yarn: #3, DK
  • Blend: 75% alpaca 25% sheep
  • Size: 4/9Nm giving 225m (245 yards) per 100g
  • Ball Size: 50g (112m)
  • Tension: 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)

As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.

What's so great about alpaca yarn?

  • Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability
  • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
  • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
  • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
  • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

Gorgeous Alpacas is more than simply a provider of knitting and crochet kits

Gorgeous Alpacas is more than simply a provider of knitting and crochet kits, yarn and knitwear. I am an occasional knitter, mostly during the winter months, I enjoy it but I am definitely not an addict or very experienced , inspite of this the friendly, efficient service from Gorgeous Alpacas is second to none.

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.

Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.

Sustainable Fashion Story

Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.

Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
