This alpaca wool knit kit uses alpaca wool from British & Irish alpaca farms. Part of our alpaca wool Restful range, which is intended for stress-free easy knitting that means you can focus on the conversation, the movie or just whatever you need to be thinking about. Each pattern is simple to work with, and has been tested on beginners, rusty knitters, and the very accomplished. Everyone reports that the yarn is fabulous soft and lovely to work with and all the feedback is that the styles are very restful to knit, and lovely to wear!
Our designer, Michelle, explains this design in her own words: The design for this shawl came about from my love of the Catherine Cookson movies. A lot of shawls are worn in these films and I thought it would be nice to honour her with a design called ‘Catherine Cookson’ shawl. You can wear this design much further down your back if you wish and hold the ends over your arms
The shawl uses lightweight DK alpaca yarn spun from the fleece of alpacas from UK farms. It's knitted as a flat panel, and you can choose either single pointed needles or circular needles...which can be helpful, just because it's a wide project and circulars hold the knitting easily.
Size: 168 x 34 cm / Large 220 x 38 cm
Kit includes:
- Cotton alpaca project bag
- Standard 150g (337m) or Large 200g (450m) of Gorgeous DK yarn made from 75% alpaca/25% sheep's wool
- Pattern for this shawl
- Optional Extra- 4.5mm circular, or 4.5mm x 35cm long single pointed needles, and a tapestry needle to sew in the ends
The shawl can be washed by hand or in a machine on a wool wash at 20 degrees.
The Wool
- Weight of Yarn: #3, DK
- Blend: 75% alpaca 25% sheep
- Size: 4/9Nm giving 225m (245 yards) per 100g
- Ball Size: 50g (112m)
- Tension: 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)
As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.
What's so great about alpaca yarn?
- Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability
- The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
- It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
- It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
- Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture
Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.
Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

My second ever project (I don’t count cotton dishcloths!) very new knitter- I am really enjoying this and to be honest was a bit scared of stepping away from just plain knit, and increasing stitches etc. The kit is great, I love the project bag and easy instructions. The online videos have helped a lot to increase my confidence and I’m really enjoying the process and proud of my progress. Thank you!
Great service delivery was fast. Really enjoyed knitting this shawl and the wool was so soft and lovely to knit. I have ordered another one just waiting for it to come. Will order more in the future. Thank you so much.
Julie, thank you so much for your lovely review, and also for ordering another kit so quickly. We appreciate it and will make sure you get extra love from now on!

Frequently Asked Questions
Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.
Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.
Sustainable Fashion Story
Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.
Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
