This alpaca wool knit kit uses alpaca wool from British and Irish alpaca farms. We recommend you knit this in the round on circular needles, but you can also choose to knit as a flat panel with long single pointed needles. Shown here in DK Superfine Parchment.

The cowl uses a great stitch: so easy, but so effective! Unusually, this is not a wraparound cowl but one we see held loosely in place with a lovely broach under a jacket or over a sweater to smarten the whole look up. So check out the colours and perhaps plan them with your winter coats.

Each pattern is simple to work with, and has been tested on beginners, rusty knitters, and the very accomplished. As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.

What's so great about alpaca yarn? 

Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability.

Let's compare it to sheep's wool

    • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
    • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
    • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
    • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Tension 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness. When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing. Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM.

Great kit

I have bought this as a Christmas present, so can’t really comment on the kit. But loved the yarn colours and the kit choices.

Superb

This is possibly the best natural yarn I’ve ever used. It’s luxuriously soft and knits up like a dream.
The pattern was indeed restful, so easy but looks fabulous.
The kits were delivered in a couple of days and I love the little tote bags, I’m going to use one for gifting my knits!
Although it online it feels as though you get personal service.
There is plenty of yarn for the project.

Love the end result and it was delightful to knit with this yarn. Bought the circular meddle but knitted it on straight needles only because I’m not keen on using the circular needle. Only down side was that I used black wool which gives off the dye when knitting. Black fingers and had to rinse a few times in cold water

Hi Ollie2, I am glad you enjoyed the experience. If you haven't used the circ needles, let us know, and we will return/refund. This batch of black wool has certainly caused us problems. There is a note about it on the product page, but amongst all the other facts, it does get lost. I hope your fingers are not still black!xxx

Absolutely love my gorgeous alpaca kit it arrived very quickly ,the pattern is very easy to follow and the wool is so soft ,I love the little bag that comes with it so useful and I must say the company is so helpful if you should have any problems I will certainly be ordering again
