This is a straight forward knitting kit using alpaca wool from British and Irish alpacas. The hat kit is perfect for beginners: No ribbing, and only a simple decrease at the end, by which time you will be ready to learn a new technique, having mastered the main two knitting stitches, Knit and Purl. AND we've got How to Videos on every stitch you need to use.  You can knit it in the round or as a flat panel.

  • Cotton alpaca project bag
  • 100g (225m) Gorgeous DK yarn made from 75% alpaca/25% sheep
  • Faux fur pompom
  • Pattern for this and two more advanced hats to knit
  • Optional 4.5mm needles (circular or single pointed) and a tapestry needle
As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness. This hat can be washed by hand or in a machine on a wool wash at 20 degrees.

What's so great about alpaca yarn? 

Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability.

Let's compare it to sheep's wool

    • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
    • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
    • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
    • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Tension 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness. When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing. Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM.
