This alpaca wool knitting kit uses alpaca yarn from British and Irish farms. It uses single pointed needles and we can include lovely bamboo knitting needles with your order. An interesting knitting project with Gorgeous results, including the softest cushion in your home.

You will work two styles: on side 1 - knitted bobbles, and on side 2, cables plus buttonholes. Of course feel free to grab your creative spark and change the knitting designs!

Finished size: 43cm x 33cm. You can buy cushion pads for this size from Merrick & Day.

Adapting the Size

If you have a smaller cushion pad, you can of course adjust the pattern to fit. Let us know, and we will even include the revised number of stitches you will need to cast on for your own pad.

Supplied with:

  • Cotton alpaca project bag
  • 250g (225m per 100g) Gorgeous DK yarn made from 75% alpaca/25% sheep
  • 6 x 3cm buttons.
  • Optional - 4.5mm needles and a cable needle, and a tapestry needle
  • Pattern for this cushion

The Wool

  • Weight of Yarn: #3, DK
  • Blend: 75% alpaca 25% sheep
  • Size: 4/9Nm giving 225m (245 yards) per 100g
  • Ball Size: 50g (112m)
  • Tension: 21 sts x 27 rows= 4"/10cm over stocking stitch with 4.5mm (UK 7, US 7)

As with all Gorgeous alpaca DK kits, it's warm and cosy, but lightweight and breathes well. The alpaca yarn has a small amount of 100% natural sheep's wool blended in, which makes it easy to knit and crochet with, and still retains that wonderful alpaca softness.

What's so great about alpaca yarn?

  • Alpaca yarn is highly valued for it's softness, warmth, and durability
  • The fibres are much finer, and generally longer, than sheep’s wool, which makes them softer and less itchy
  • It contains no lanolin which makes it hypo-allergenic (and also makes it more sustainable as it can be processed at very low temperatures)
  • It also has a natural sheen that gives finished items a luxurious look
  • Both sheep and alpaca fleece is water-repellent, but alpaca also wicks away the moisture

Hand washing: Use lukewarm water and a specialist wool detergent. Hair conditioner in the final rinse will add extra softness.
When washing and rinsing squeeze the garment rather than rubbing.
Gently squeeze out excess water before rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry.

Washing machines: Modern machines with delicate programme at 20C using a wool delicate detergent. Can be spun at 400 RPM

Excellent kit, beautifully packaged

I am a novice knitter, so thought I'd knit something that would take me outside of my comfort zone during an enforced home stay. I have never made bobbles or buttonholes, but with very clear instructions to follow I have a cushion to be proud of! Excellent kit that was beautifully packaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Natural fibers are biodegradable and decompose naturally, unlike synthetic fibers, which take over 200 years to degrade. During this time, they contribute to landfill waste, release greenhouse gases, and leach toxic chemicals into the environment.

Alpaca material is stain-resistant, which means that it needs less washing and is less likely to get ruined by stains … and alpaca is stain-resistant without having chemicals and coatings added to it to make it so.

Sustainable Fashion Story

Alpaca yarn is naturally wrinkle-resistant, eliminating the need for ironing and reducing energy consumption. This helps lower carbon emissions, with ironing estimated to produce 190 kg of CO₂ per person annually.

Unlike sheep and goats, alpacas graze sustainably by trimming grass instead of uprooting it. This allows the grass to regrow naturally, preserving the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems.
